Our Mission Statement

The mission of the Belgrade Historical Society shall be to identify, collect and preserve documents, material objects and oral narratives concerning the history of Belgrade and surrounding areas; to perpetuate the memory of those who contributed to this history; to identify and promote the preservation and restoration of buildings of historic and architectural interest; to develop educational programs; and to encourage researchers in their study of the town’s history. Ultimately, it is the goal of the Belgrade Historical Society to house the collection in a secure, accessible space.

Belgrade Historical Society (BHS)

The Belgrade Historical Society (BHS) was founded in 1976 by a dedicated group of local residents involved in that year’s Belgrade Bicentennial Heritage and Festival Committees. They were committed to preserving the rich history of Belgrade and its surrounding communities. As an all-volunteer organization, BHS is led by a board of directors who oversee acquisitions, curate our growing collection, and organize annual programs and events designed to educate, engage, and inspire.

Recently, we successfully completed a capital campaign to restore the Old Town Meeting House, a historic landmark now under consideration by the Maine Preservation Commission to be added to the National Historic Register.
