Belgrade has been home to its fair share of notable residents. Among the most prominent were Peaseley Morrill’s sons, Lot M. Morrill (born 1813) and Anson P. Morrill (born 1811), both of whom served as governors of Maine and members of Congress. In 1861, Lot Morrill was appointed to the U.S. Senate, filling Hannibal Hamlin’s seat when Hamlin became Vice President under Abraham Lincoln. Morrill later went on to serve as Secretary of the Treasury.
